Memories and impressions: 60 years of Swiss archaeology in Sudan
December 1965, northern Sudan, a team of Swiss archaeologists began exploring the Tabo site, marked by two impressive, millennia-old royal colossi lying on the ground. Thus began an extraordinary human and scientific adventure that continues to this day. The outbreak of armed conflict in 2023 led to the temporary suspension of excavations, which gave way to laboratory work conducted on the archives and ceramic shards preserved at the University of Geneva.
The exhibition invites visitors to follow in the footsteps of these researchers who, season after season, are unearthing from the sands of Sudan the forgotten history of this region and the civilization that flourished there, from Prehistory (4th millennium BCE) to the Meroitic period (4th century CE). Through some one hundred archival photographs, maps, and excavation notebooks, as well as interviews with researchers, it brings to life the memory of fieldwork, the discoveries accumulated over the decades, and the powerful bonds of friendship.
